When the World Shakes but God Remains

Though the world may shake, the soul can remain at peace because the anchor holds. The anchor is not in the ground beneath us, but in God above us.

Does your life ever feel like the ground is shifting beneath you? In this devotional, Isaac Sayal shares a personal story of faith in the face of an earthquake and reminds us that while the world may shake, our anchor in God remains immovable.

When the World Shakes, God Remains!

“Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed.” (Psalm 46:2)

The ground beneath us gives way as the mountains move and the waters roar. Creation itself feels unstable. This is not poetic hyperbole but an honest recognition that life can unravel in ways we never expected.

And yet the psalmist says, we will not fear because fear loses its authority when God is seen rightly. The circumstances described here are extreme, but our response must not be panic. We must remain steady, not because the situation is small, but because great is our God.

This is faith. Faith is not the absence of tremors. It is the refusal to collapse when the tremors come. Though the world may shake, the soul can remain at peace because the anchor holds. The anchor is not in the ground beneath us, but in God above us.

“Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed.” Psalm 46:2

I saw this lived out years ago through my father-in-law. High in the Himalayas, as a magnitude 7 earthquake shook his home, he chose not to run in fear, but to pray and lie down to rest. That kind of peace is not natural. It is formed. His confidence in our Father in heaven shaped his family. My wife carries that same quiet assurance; a faith strengthened over time through remembering that God remains faithful in every shifting season.

Fear thrives on uncertainty. Faith grows through remembrance. So let us remember that Jesus spoke into storm and fear alike when He said, “It is I. Do not be afraid.” Matthew 14:27.

Though our world may shake, our God does not. This is peace. Not the absence of trouble but the presence of an unshakable God.

As Tim Keller often reminded us that the gospel does not promise a storm free life, but it is the presence of God in the midst of that storm.
