Jesus says in Matthew 5:13, “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?”
When making a meal, salt is used to enhance other flavours; to help them come to life and release their full flavour in the meal. Therefore salt is not used to enhance salt!
As Christians we are called to be salt and light to the unbelieving world. However, too many Christians lose almost all their ties and friendships in the unsaved world when they come to faith and draw back from those in need.
While it’s vital to support and build up the body of Christ, we also need to shine the light of our Lord in the dark places and help those who don’t know the full life available in Christ to experience His goodness themselves.
Of course I’m not saying to go back to our old life and battle with those things that make us fall into sin, but I am asking us to take an honest look at ourselves and see if we have cut out any people that God may have called us to…
Don’t get me wrong, however. There may be some people that for some reason or another are not good for us to associate with because of their negative influence over us. However there are many others who would be open to what God has to say to them through the relationships we have with them.
I would challenge you this week to be ‘salty’ to those who you may not have been in contact with for some time. It might be a quick phone call to say ‘hi’ or a coffee catch up. Whatever you do, remember we are called to be salt and light to the unsaved world. That is our great commission!
God bless and go for it!
