The Lord is My Rock, My Fortress, My Deliverer
“I will love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer.” (Psalm 18:1-2)
Every journey of faith must begin with love. Not duty, not fear, but love.
Before David speaks of battle or deliverance, he begins with devotion. “I will love You, O Lord, my strength.” It is the language of a heart that has been held through storms and found its home in God. Strength here is not muscle or might, but the quiet endurance that comes from leaning on One who never fails.
When David calls the Lord his rock, he is not describing a distant refuge, but a nearness he has known in danger. Rocks are immovable and unchanging. They do not bend to circumstance. So too, the Lord stands firm beneath the weight of our shifting fears. Every believer learns, sooner or later, that faith is not built on explanations, but on a Person. When the foundations of life quake, the Rock remains.
Amy Carmichael, who laboured for years in India without rest or recognition, once wrote, “All along, let us remember we are not asked to understand, but simply to trust.” Her words echo David’s song that safety is not the absence of trouble but the presence of God.
When I say, “The Lord is my fortress,” I’m confessing that my life is guarded by grace, not circumstance. Every wall I hide behind is His mercy, every shield His strength.
So as we meditate on Psalm 18, let us remember that this is a declaration of love to the One who steadies our trembling hands. For in His strength we find rest, and in His steadfast love, we learn to stand.
Let us remember Thomas Watson's words, “They that love God will be invincible, for love is the armour of the soul.”
