This question is really a ‘self-checker’. Are we putting on the correct shirt for the ‘moment’? Wearing the right shirt influences observers, as well as providing opportunities for conversation.
Recently I attended a two-day church summit meeting with over 500 attendees. Some expressed delight at seeing so many men present, others were thrilled about the large number of youth. I guess you could say we had a good representation of all ages inquiring as to how to renew our parishes, and to literally go forth and be disciples, as Jesus commanded us to do.
The first day I wore a non-invasive shirt. The second day I put on my Promise Keepers black T-shirt with the logo on the front, and a bit of a challenge on the back. Many people would have seen my shirt, quite a few stopped to tell me they ‘like my shirt’! My reply was, ‘so does my wife’!
It reminded me of the need to ‘Love My Wife’! So simple, yet not always easy. But the shirt helped.
It is also a simple way to get a message across.
What shirt we wear can either influence change or be a challenge for others. And it may even invite communication. But there is more.
It is not just our shirts that transfer happiness and challenge. Our attitudes, verbal responses, and actions are also like shirts with a message. Are we wearing an inviting face and smile? Do we listen fully (which is good communication) and respond with respect?
Are we wearing the right shirt?
Also, we need to have a look at what is beneath our shirts. Emotions, feelings, in-grained thoughts, hurts, fears, maybe even anger. Is everything underneath our shirts reflecting what the shirt states?
