Alive in Christ: The Call to the Battle

The Beautifully Wrapped Monument

By Eric Bond - Picture a massive, built-out 4WD truck sitting in a driveway. It’s got the aggressive mud tyres, the heavy-duty bull bar, a pristine custom paint job, and a snorkel kit ready for the deepest river crossings. It looks incredibly imposing – the ultimate machine built for the rugged back country.

But if you turn the key, nothing happens. The engine block is completely cracked and seized solid.

Despite how powerful it looks on the outside, it is completely stationary. It cannot move, it cannot rescue anyone, and it cannot fulfil the purpose for which it was engineered. It has become a beautifully wrapped monument to absolute powerlessness.

As men, it is devastatingly easy to live our lives exactly like that truck.

From the outside looking in, we appear to have the script dialled in completely. We have the career progression, the family routines, the weekend hobbies, and the regular church attendance. We wear the culturally accepted armour of a successful man.

Yet behind closed doors, many of us are secretly running on empty, dealing with a quiet, exhausting sense of spiritual burnout, mechanical routine, or hidden defeat. We look fully functional, but on the inside, the engine is dead.

The Reality of the Grave

In Ephesians 2:1-3, the Apostle Paul provides a diagnostic assessment that cuts straight through our polite masks: he states that we were dead in our transgressions and sins.

Paul doesn't offer a mild self-help critique. He doesn't say we were simply "under the weather," "tripping up occasionally," or "in need of a lifestyle adjustment." He uses the word dead. A dead man cannot perform CPR on himself. A cracked engine block cannot forge its own new pistons.

For many modern men, spiritual death manifests not as overt wickedness, but as a slow, numb surrender to the "script" of the world around us. We become entirely reactive, operating out of survival mode, defensive self-preservation, or unexpressed resentment.

Worst of all, we isolate ourselves. We fight our heaviest battles in total darkness because we’ve been conditioned to believe that admitting a strategic vulnerability is a liability.

But the hard truth of the Gospel is that a dead man cannot rescue himself. We do not need a minor mechanical tune-up; we require a total resurrection.

The Great Intervention

The entire axis of human history shifts on the two words that open Ephesians 2:4: "But God."
The text continues: “But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ…”

Notice the tactical timing of God’s intervention. He did not wait for us to clean up our language, sort out our tempers, fix our marriages, or perfect our theology. He didn’t wait for the engine to start turning over. He moved while we were completely helpless, flat on our backs in the dirt.

When Jesus Christ broke out of the grave, He didn't just achieve a solo victory. He reached down into our spiritual death, shattered the legal chains of our past failures, generational baggage, and secret shames, and pulled us out of the grave with Him.

As men, our default wiring is built around performance. We are trained to earn our keep, hit our quarterly targets, and pay our own way. If we carry that transactional mindset into our faith, we treat God like a demanding, unsatisfied supervisor whom we are constantly trying to appease.

But Paul explicitly dismantles the performance trap: “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

Spiritual life is an absolute gift to be received, not a wage to be earned. You cannot shock God with your flaws, and you cannot impress Him with your self-reliance.

Executing the New Operations Script

What shifts on Monday morning when a man is truly made alive in Christ?

First, the old authority structures lose their legal title over your life. Addictive loops, past failures, fear of rejection, and the pressure to conform to a hollow cultural script no longer hold command over you. You have a new Commander, and you operate under a new kingdom mandate.

Second, you stop trying to "white-knuckle" your way through character transformation using basic human willpower. Willpower is a finite fuel tank that usually runs dry by mid-afternoon when traffic hits or pressure mounts at work.

Being alive in Christ means that the exact same resurrection power that raised Jesus from the dead is an active, indwelling force operating inside your spirit via the Holy Spirit.

We are trained for deployment. Ephesians 2:10 tells us: “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”

The word "workmanship" comes from the Greek poiema – meaning a custom-designed masterpiece. You aren’t a mass-produced product rolling off a generic assembly line.

God has specifically engineered your personality, your strengths, and even redeemed your scars for a distinct set of operations.

He has already mapped out the territory, the assignments, and the tactical missions He expects you to execute – which includes showing up as a proactive spiritual leader in your home; being a man of absolute integrity in your industry; and a pillar of strength for the vulnerable in your community.

Locking the Shield Wall

There is a final, non-negotiable law to walking out this resurrected life: You cannot do it alone.

The enemy’s primary tactic against a man is isolation. A soldier cut off from his unit is an easy target to be flanked and taken out.

In ancient warfare, soldiers stood shoulder-to-shoulder in a phalanx. A single warrior's shield didn't just protect himself; it covered the blind spot of the man to his left. When they locked their shields together, their defensive line became an impenetrable, advancing wall of iron.

We have to break the exhausting culture of surface-level, polite conversations. Being alive in Christ requires the courage to invite a few trusted men into the messy, unpolished sectors of your life.

You need brothers who care enough about your destiny to call you out when you are drifting, pull you back when you are slipping, and stand locked in the trenches with you when life hits the fan.

The Orders

Do not leave this page treating these truths as good theory or poetic encouragement. It is time to execute.

If you have been living out of a dead script, chained to past mistakes, coasting in spiritual passivity, or trying to fight your battles as a lone ranger, today is the day to draw a line in the dirt.

Leave the dead things in the grave where they belong. Step into the resurrection power Jesus bought for you, lock shields with the brothers around you, and live like a man who is truly alive.
