We all dream of the day the alarm clock stops ringing and the 9-to-5 grind becomes a memory. But Peter Goulter asks questions we often forget: Once the briefcase and laptop bag are unpacked, who are you going to be? And, what are you going to do on Tuesdays?
Looking Forward to Retirement? Yeah, Nah.
by Peter Goulter -
So, you’re counting down the days to 65. You can practically taste the freedom. No more alarm clocks, no more 45-minute crawls through traffic, and finally the government is paying you to stay home. It’s all golf, fishing, and that long-awaited overseas trip.
But wait; there’s more to consider. Before you hang up the boots, you have to answer one crucial question: What will I do on Tuesdays?
Retirement brings a mountain of free time, but it also brings a shift in identity. Who are you when you no longer have a job title? What is your worth when you aren't “The Boss” or “The Tech Guy”? For many men, this transition is a scary season. Statistics show that men who aren't prepared for the “Third Age” often struggle with isolation, and some even see their health decline rapidly once the structure of work vanishes.
The reality is, you’ll never be as rich or as healthy as the day you retire. On average, you have about 200 months of life left. The goal isn’t just to reach the finish line of work, but to have a plan for the miles that come after.

Here’s how to prep for the “Yeah, Nah” season:
Audit Your Tuesdays: Look for “Third Age” opportunities. Whether it’s stepping up as a grandfather, volunteering at church, or taking a part-time role, you need a reason to get out of bed.
Watch Your Health: Don't ignore the warning signs. Keep up with annual checkups and be mindful of “boredom habits” like sliding into food or alcohol addictions.
Talk to Your Spouse: This is a team transition. Discuss everything from finances and downsizing to the hard stuff – like caring for each other or the reality of performance issues as we age.
Pack Light: We all carry lifetime baggage. This is the season to forgive, make peace, and deal with old wounds. Don’t let unfulfilled dreams become a mountain of regret.
Get Your House in Order: Review your Will and appoint a Power of Attorney you trust. It’s about protecting your legacy and your loved ones.
Invest in People: The best legacy isn't your bank balance; it’s your relationships. Join a men’s group, share the journey, and get right with God.
Retirement is a major change, but you don’t have to do the season alone. Plan the work, then work the plan.
Blessings,
Peter Goulter
