Be Spiritually Awake

Paris Olympics controversy

If you’re one of many who woke up early Saturday morning to watch the Olympics opening Ceremony, you’ll understand the controversy that unfolded, the parody of Jesus’ last supper with His disciples by the lgbtqia+ faction of the host country.

The internet went crazy. Understandably, leaders from the mainstream churches laid complaints squarely with the organisers and the French leaders. I’ve seen how Christians on social media erupted in all manner of ways; condemning the mockery of our Christian faith, even encouraging others not to watch or follow the Olympics. This is also understandable.

Paris is known as the city of light. But if we didn’t know it already, France is one of the most secular nations in the world. The How, When, and What is not the point of this article, but I do want to say that ‘darkness’ is the total absence of light. If you want to dig a little to find out when darkness came over the host nation, you won’t have to dig deep.

The good news is God is present, God is powerful! He knows what is going on and what should be happening instead of the darkness we witnessed.

Just like Peter who drew the sword and cut off the ear of the servant of Caiaphas the high priest, we are too quick to draw our own sword. Technology has given rise to an army of keyboard warriors especially amongst Christians, jumping on the bandwagon to condemn the Games, and so forth.

We forget very quickly that the battle belongs to the Lord (2 Chronicles 20:15). What we ought to do first is to look to the Lord to see what He is doing.

Peter, who was asleep despite being warned by Jesus to stay awake and prayerful, reacted out of his own emotions and the sheer lack of understanding of the moment in relation to the events to be unfolded in the hours ahead. He was spiritually asleep.

Let’s not be sorrowful lest we find ourselves asleep like the apostles, but instead be prayerful. Our God is all powerful, and no gay pride can overthrow the promises of the Lord over our nation or over any nation for that matter.

Let your first response be one of seeking where and what the Father is doing. Let your heart turn to Him, for guidance and understanding.

Let us come together, seek His face, and worship Him together.

In His richest blessings,

Frank Po Ching
