A little bit of porn, what’s the big deal?
What is it about this issue that polarises opinion in this and other countries? I mean, boys will be boys, right?
Well unfortunately, pornography is a very slippery slope and there is no such thing as maintaining your position unless it is “zero use” of porn. The type of content you view will only get worse, and the frequency will increase.
This well-hidden epidemic is sweeping our churches in the western world, with the use of personal devices which give access to pornography from virtually anywhere. Statistics reveal that 50% of church-going men will have accessed pornography in the last month.
This is a startling statistic when you consider the number of households that represents in our communities. This insidious cancer is spreading across denominations, age groups, and ethnic groups. It knows no borders or barriers.
Why are we at Promise Keepers so concerned about pornography? Well, it’s because we really want to see men set free from all forms of bondage. Porn just happens to be one of the enemy’s major weapons against men and boys in the 21st century. We are yet to fully understand the magnitude of this curse on society and the Christian Church.
The enemy is using familiar weapons in a new arena. The weapons of guilt, shame and isolation, not to mention lust. However, there is good news - these can all be overcome. We have the power of Almighty God on our side!
“So what do I do first, Paul?” you may ask.
Well the answer is closer than you think and it does work. It has been tried and tested through Alcoholics Anonymous since 1948.
If you can agree with and believe these two adapted statements then you have a beginning!
- We admitted we were powerless over pornography - that our lives had become unmanageable.
- We came to believe that the Lord Jesus Christ could and would restore us to sanity.
Make a decision to agree with Jeremiah 29:11-13
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
This is indeed spiritual warfare! This was first written to the exiled nation of Israel, and you too can return from exile!
This is the next part: When you are ready to do this, tell someone you trust, break your isolation, seek support!
Until next week…

Paul our teenage sons have been making the choice to view pornographic materials. We have tried to teach and guide and restrict and rebuild trust, but it continues to be a temptation to them. Do you have any resources that would be suitable to share with a 14 and 16 year old?
