Christ is faithful: A reflection on grace and recovery
By Isaac Sayal: There are seasons when we look at our lives and wonder how we ever made it this far. Then grace reminds us that we did not arrive here by our strength, but because the God who called us has carried us.
Peter writes, “His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3). Not some things. Not merely enough to survive. All things necessary for the journey.
I have seen this truth written across the pages of my own story. As a missionary doctor, I travelled to places where resources were few, yet God was never absent. I served among people whose needs were greater than what my hands could provide. Again and again, the Lord supplied what was needed.
Those years also included the long and difficult journey of recovery from addiction. There I discovered another kind of poverty, one that determination alone could never overcome. What I could not accomplish in my own strength, God accomplished by His grace.
Grace did not merely rescue me from the pit. Grace has continued to keep me walking.
Peter reminds us that we are “kept by the power of God through faith” (1 Peter 1:5). Paul calls us to walk worthy of the Lord, yet the God who commands our perseverance also supplies the grace by which we persevere.
The God who calls is the God who keeps.
The God who begins the work is the God who sustains it.
Peter assures us that the God of all grace calls us to His eternal glory in Christ and after suffering, establishes, strengthens, and settles His people (1 Peter 5:10).
My testimony is not that I was strong enough. My testimony is that Christ was faithful enough.
Whatever today requires, His grace is sufficient. Whatever tomorrow brings, His power will not fail.
He supplies. He sustains. He sanctifies. He keeps.
And one day, by that same sovereign grace, He will bring us safely home.
