If God Promised It, He Will Fulfil It

When God gives us a promise, He is faithful to see it come to pass.

Stop Forcing What God Has Already Spoken

by Frank Po Ching - Twin brothers Esau and Jacob caused their mother, Rebekah, a lot of pain and discomfort while still in her womb. When she asked God why this was happening to her, God told her that there are:

“two nations in your womb, two peoples shall be separated from your body; one people shall be stronger than the other, and the older shall serve the younger.” (Genesis 25:23).

The Battle in the Womb

The boys were at war with each other in Rebekah’s womb. Although she felt it, she didn’t know the significance of what was going on. The only thing she knew after talking with God, was that the son who was born second, would be special.

The war continued even at birth. Jacob came out second, holding on to his older brother Esau’s heel, hence the meaning of his name, “he grasps the heel.”

As they grew, their father Isaac favoured his older son Esau, who was a hunter and would cook choice game meat that his father loved to eat. Following cultural traditions and his love for Esau, Isaac intended to give Esau his blessings. But this was going against God’s will.

Jacob was born to inherit the promise God gave to his grandfather Abraham and his father Isaac.

The Trap of Human Manipulation

Rebekah knew that Jacob’s life was going to be blessed. But instead of letting God fulfil His promise His way, she took it upon herself to make sure Jacob, her favourite son, received Isaac’s blessing instead of Esau. With Jacob’s help they set out to deceive his father Isaac, and Jacob received the blessing.

How many times have we tried to run ahead of God to fulfil His promises for us?

“There is no wisdom or understanding or counsel against the Lord.” (Proverbs 21:30).

How many times have we tried to run ahead of God to fulfil His promises for us? "There is no wisdom or understanding or counsel against the Lord." Proverbs 21:30

Key Lessons for Us

  • God is Faithful to His Word: When God gives us a promise, He is faithful to see it come to pass. When God led the Israelites out of Egypt, He promised to lead them to the Promise Land. It was unbelief and disobedience that meant only some made it to the Promise Land.
  • You Were Born with a Divine Purpose: Like Jacob, every one of us was born with a purpose, a plan that the Father had for us even before we were formed in our mother’s womb (Psalm 139:16).
  • Transformation Requires a Rebirth: To walk into his destiny, Jacob had to go through a rebirth. He had to change his ways, his belief system, and rely more on God rather than his own deceitful ways (Genesis 32, 33, 35).

Moving Forward in Faith

To step into what God has for us, let us be reminded of God’s calling and destiny for our lives, and:

“…be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2).

If God has spoken a promise over your life, lean on Him and believe that He is faithful to make it come to pass. If you feel you haven’t yet received a promise from God, spend time in prayer, read His Word, and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal His purpose for you.

Core Promises to Anchor Your Mind:

Guidance and Direction: "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye." (Psalm 32:8).

Strength and Courage: "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9).

Peace in Anxiety: "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7).

Provision and Care: "And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19).

Renewal and Perseverance: "But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint." (Isaiah 40:31).

Questions for Group Discussion and Personal Reflection

1. Surrendering the Hustle: Rebekah and Jacob resorted to deceit because they believed God needed their help to bring about His plan. Where in your life (career, family, ministry, or personal growth) are you tempted to take shortcuts or run ahead of God's timing? "There is no wisdom or understanding or counsel against the Lord." (Proverbs 21:30)

2. The Rebirth of Character: Before Jacob could walk fully into his destiny as Israel, he had to go through a profound transformation, leaving behind his manipulative ways to rely entirely on God. What is one habit, mindset, or old pattern that God is asking you to lay down so you can step into your spiritual calling? "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." (Romans 12:2)

3. Standing Firm in God's Promises: Frank lists several core promises from Scripture (Guidance, Strength, Peace, Provision, Renewal). Which specific promise of God do you need to anchor your mind in right now, and why? "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)

4. Brotherhood and Accountability: It is easy to default to self-reliance when we feel isolated or under pressure. How can we, as a band of brothers, practically hold each other accountable to wait on the Lord rather than making reckless moves in our own strength? "But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint." (Isaiah 40:31)
