Taking Control: Lessons from Elisha and the Desert

by Geoff Wiklund - A big regret in my life was when I knew what God had spoken, but I allowed others to influence me to do something different because of their strong personalities.

When the armies of Israel, Judah, and Edom were trapped in a desert without water while fighting against Moab in 2 Kings 3:14-18, we see how the prophet Elisha took control of the situation and sought the Lord.

  • And Elisha said, “As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, surely were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not look at you, nor see you. But now bring me a musician.”
  • Then it happened, when the musician played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him. And he said, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Make this valley full of ditches.’
  • For thus says the LORD: ‘You shall not see wind, nor shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, so that you, your cattle, and your animals may drink.’
  • And this is a simple matter in the sight of the LORD; He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand. (2 Kings 3:14-18).

There is a great lesson for us all. We need to learn to take control of our situations as Elijah did. Then take the time to hear what the Father is speaking to us.

Jesus was always in control of His situations, and I want to encourage you to take the authority that is yours and establish control. Not a negative kind that upsets others, but control that glorifies the Father.

Secondly, the supply of water required some hard digging in the heat with no water, but the solution was easy for God.

I wish success would come easily, but reality has taught me that some hard work is required as well. Faith often comes with some sweat required.

"I want you to change your mindset that miracles are hard. They are easy for God."

Blessings,
Geoff Wilund

We’re diving into Geoff Wiklund's message on influence, authority, and "digging ditches." Whether you’re facing a dry season or a "strong personality" at work, grab a coffee and join a group of men who have your back.

Discussion Starters:

The Influence Check: Geoff mentions letting strong personalities override God’s voice. Who is currently the loudest voice in your ear? Is it helping or hindering your walk?

Taking Authority: What does it look like to "take control" of a difficult situation at home or work in a way that honours God?

Ditch Digging: Miracles are easy for God, but they often require our "sweat." What practical work (your "ditch") is God asking you to do right now while you wait for the water?

The Musician’s Role: Elisha used music to help him hear God. What is your go-to "environment" (silence, worship, Scripture) for tuning out the world and tuning into the Father?

A Simple Matter: How would your stress level change if you viewed your biggest problem today as a "simple matter" in the sight of the Lord?
